Meet the graduates
Master of Arts in Christian Formation
Jennifer Helmuth Shenk

Jennifer Helmuth Shenk of Goshen, Indiana, graduated from 91大神app on May 3, 2025, with a Master of Arts in Christian Formation. She plans to continue serving as Campus Pastor for Goshen College.
Jen previously earned a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Goshen College and an Associate of Arts from Hesston (Kansas) College. Her home congregation is Berkey Avenue Mennonite Fellowship in Goshen, a congregation of Indiana-Michigan Mennonite Conference of Mennonite Church USA. She is married to Jeff Shenk, and they have three adult sons. Her parents are Martha Helmuth of Goshen, Indiana, and the late Eli Helmuth.
鈥淲hen I began taking classes at seminary, I had no idea of what the end result would be; I was simply following a call to pursue ministry of some sort,鈥 Jen reflected. 鈥淐oming to 91大神app was the right 鈥榥ext step鈥 for me on my path of discernment. My journey at 91大神app was filled with growth, learning, deep connections and powerful encounters with Scripture. It was so inspiring to study the Bible with others (from around the world) with different perspectives and learn from them. Due to having children at home, I was only able to take a few classes at a time, so my seminary degree took many years! But going at a slower pace enabled me to sink deeper into each class and apply what I was learning within my congregation.
鈥淲hile at seminary, I applied for a pastoral position and was hired. This, along with continued study, provided the clarity I needed to complete my master鈥檚 degree in Christian Formation. I am deeply grateful to my professors who shared their wisdom with humility and compassion; to my classmates over the years; and for my family, who supported me every step of the way. I learned so much during my time at seminary; perhaps the greatest discovery was remembering and reconnecting with my belovedness as a child of God, and discovering my call to help others do the same.鈥

鈥淢y learning journey at 91大神app has been about discovering what it means to be a servant leader, and I am grateful for the ways 91大神app has shaped me,鈥 Chialis reflected. 鈥淭hrough practical courses, mentorship and conversations with peers and professors, I have gained a deeper understanding that leadership is not about seeking power or recognition, but serving others with humility and vulnerability. One of the valuable blessings of my time at 91大神app has been the genuine friendships I have formed with friends from diverse cultural backgrounds. As I look to the future, I want to see where God will lead me next and how I can use my gifts and skills to serve others. To God be the glory!鈥

One of the highlights of my time at 91大神app has been the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful outdoor space in the summer, where I can grow vegetables. It鈥檚 not only relaxing and enjoyable, but it also helps us prepare for the winter months 鈥 storing food, especially vegetables and seasonings, to use throughout the colder season.
鈥91大神app, as an educational institution of God, has truly prepared me well, providing both academic excellence and personal care for its students. It has been a wonderful place for my family and me to grow, learn and thrive.鈥

He anticipates completing his Master of Divinity with a major in Theological Studies: Biblical Studies in August 2025. He also fulfilled a seminary internship requirement with EvaSUE as a Partnership Catalyst, as well as with Mountain States Mennonite Conference as a future Anabaptist leader intern. He anticipates continuing to work in campus ministry and assisting EvaSUE. At the same time, he is exploring other opportunities for mission and pastoral assignments. His home congregation is Kebena Meserete Kristos Church in Addis Ababa, a congregation of Meserete Kristos Church (MKC), the largest member church in Mennonite World Conference. 鈥淢y journey at 91大神app deepened my understanding and engagement with the Anabaptist faith tradition and its history and theology, which emanate from the diverse voices of the early Anabaptist movements and contemporary global Anabaptist perspectives, beliefs and practices,鈥 Abenezer reflected. 鈥淚 particularly cherish the Anabaptist commitment to peace, love for Jesus, obedience to Christ鈥檚 teachings, the grounding of our lives in the Bible, and the dedication to communal worship and interpretation of Scripture. The insights I gained from 91大神app fuel my ongoing intellectual, spiritual and ministerial journey. As an Anabaptist from outside of the Western context, I felt welcomed and equipped with the tools to interact with and contribute to the evolving definition of Anabaptism at 91大神app.
鈥淎dditionally, I learned new spiritual disciplines, such as Lectio Divina, contemplative prayer and communal hymn singing, which sustained me during my time at 91大神app. I will carry these practices with me to guide my spiritual formation and that of others I serve. Through my coursework, I also acquired skills for engaging in meaningful dialogue; conducting various types of research; reading and interpreting Scripture responsibly; and articulating my theological, ethical and practical thoughts in writing and other forms. I am grateful for the opportunity and privilege of studying at 91大神app alongside remarkable people in an enriching environment, and I do not take this experience for granted. Ultimately, one of my dreams is to share what I have learned at 91大神app with others in my community.鈥
